Lemosho Route

Overview of the Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route begins on Kilimanjaro's western side at Lemosho Gate (2,100 m). The trail takes you through diverse landscapes, starting with lush rainforest, progressing to moorland, then alpine desert, and finally reaching the arctic summit. The descent follows the Mweka route, which leads down the southeastern slope of the mountain.

While most trekkers complete the Lemosho route in seven days, an eight-day option is available for better acclimatisation. Opting for the eight-day trek is recommended to improve your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route is a favorite for many, thanks to its versatility, stunning scenery, and a pristine, wilderness-like start to the climb. Though spotting large animals like antelopes is rare, it’s still a possibility.

A unique highlight of this route is the opportunity to hike across the Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. This adds an exceptional and memorable dimension to the trek.

The route’s acclimatisation profile is another strong point, as it allows your body to adapt effectively to the increasing altitude. This is achieved by spreading the ascent over multiple days and incorporating a pattern where trekkers climb to a higher altitude during the day and then descend slightly to sleep. This feature significantly enhances acclimatisation.
